Classic PC Games

Take a step back in time and revisit your favorite DOS and Windows games. The files available in this collection consist primarily of PC demos, freeware, and shareware. These files are the original releases which will require intermediate to advanced knowledge to install and run on modern operating systems. If you would rather simply try some classic MS-DOS games inside your browser you may wish to try the online MS-DOS Software Library. New games are added to this collection on a weekly basis.

Specific news regarding major updates can be found on our website Demu.

If you are the copyright holder of a classic computer game and would like the full version of your work to appear in the archive please e-mail me at swizzle@demu.org. I'm also more than happy to answer questions and fill requests.

Compatibility Information
The majority of these games will not run correctly on modern operating systems. For DOS titles you will need to use DOSBox. You can find an easy to follow DOSBox tutorial here.

Most Windows titles will need to be run through Windows Virtual PC under the appropriate version of Windows for full functionality. Some titles may *mostly* work by simply configuring them to use a compatibility mode.

If you are running Linux, BSD, Solaris or Mac OS X, Wine will run most of the older Windows based software (and DOSBox).

One sunny day, a lighthearted Fool strolled along a hilly path, whistling a merry tune. A long wooden pole was slung over his shoulder and attached to it was a cloth bundle which carried his life's possessions. "What a marvelous afternoon!" he exclaimed to no one in particular, pausing to appreciate the lovely countryside. Soon the trees parted and the path led to a small clearing, ending abruptly at the edge of a treacherous cliff. But the Fool was undaunted and kept at his swift...

Don't Look Back is a minimalistic retro mix of platformer and shooter while also being a version of Orpheus and Eurydice legend. Standing at your lover's grave you descend with a handgun to the underworld hoping you can bring the deceased soul back to life. Atmospheric and difficult. This one is a must-play(-through)!

Well this game comes with very little info. Simply try to win races and buy better cars as you go along. Races, and tournaments open up as you win more and more. Steering is with directional keys, and that's it. Don't expect there to be anything beyond that. Oh, of course always expect to be addicted...!

"Karoshi Factory" is the third installment in the popular "Karoshi" series by Jesse Venbrux. This time you have to cooperate with other characters and kill them all at the end of each of the 25 levels. The game is much more conventional, similar to classic puzzlers like "Lost Vikings" and absurd levels are almost absent this time, so gameplay is rather calm in comparison to its predecessors. Also some of the levels are no real logic/puzzle levels, but require...

If you think "oh no, not another tetris clone" then i'll have to say its not just that. This one is in fact quite good. It is inspired by and is a tribute to the C64 era, and it's music. The music in this game is something i personally like very much, but also the sound effects, plays a big role. The synthetic, and crispy music fits very well with the rest of the game. It also allows for 2P as seen in screenies. (Drasir-Vel)

Life of stuntman is hard, luckily the one you control in this game has unlimited lives...and he dies often... Great arcade game, in which you must shoot your hero with the cannon, perform various tricks in the air and land safely on the mat. Game is hard and bloody if you fail to land safely. But you can turn the blood off if you want.

Well this side-scrolling action-packed game is surely a great way to spend half an hour. It really just races away, while you try to keep in control of what happens... Sadly the games developer felt it necessary to take his own life in the beginning of 2006. The mood of the game might give you the idea that he was not happy about life and what it had to offer him.

Tasty Static is a videogame where you go really fast and jump a lot. You'll probably get really annoyed along the way too. It's a clone of an excellent PC oldie called Skyroads by BlueMoon Interactive, which is required playing if you like this kind of stuff. There are quite a lot of levels in Tastystatic, and so you should be entertained (or annoyed) for quite a while. More user-submitted levels can be found on the website.

This is the sequel to the popular black-humuor puzzle game "Karoshi". And again you have to help your character to commit suicide over and over again. Like in its predecessor, logic won't take you anywhere. Instead of the normal level design you should expect weird and strange ideas and so thinking outside the box is required if you want to succeed in this game. "Karoshi 2.0" includes 50 new levels, a speed run version of "Karoshi", a Tetris-like minigame and a...

Glaxium is an OpenGL-based third person perspective space shooter. Gameplay consists of flying your ship over the moon-like (at least Earth is visible in the background) rocky path, shooting enemy waves, avoiding bombs and destroying boulders containing bonuses. Glaxium has no options, no story and unknown length, so there's not much more to write about it.

Isometric arkanoid with three difficulty levels, bonuses rarely seen in this type of games (shooting ball, pinball-style speed accelerators) and strategy elements. This is freeware version of URSE Games' game "Nuclear Ball". The latter one can still be purchased from developer's site and both seem to be identical products (but with altered names) with all features available.

Standard horizontal shooter with stages, bosses, normal and special weapons and flying bonuses. One thing which makes Goldrake Spacer very different from other shooters is operetta-like music. Nothing can be told about story, because game is made entirely in Italian and there are no Italians currently in CWF roster. If youre one of them you can enjoy the game fully, but as in case of all similar games you can enjoy it anyway without being polyglot - it's playable.

Well you might have looked at the genre of this game, and tried to figure out what genre it is. Trust me, I did the same thing when I was adding the game... This is something a bit new. The developer describes it this way: mono - part Asteroids mono - part Robotron mono - part Paint Shop Pro And I think that is as close as we are going to get... Brilliant game, really addictive and invigorating.

Action/strategy game with ecological theme. Your goal in each level is to guide pollution clouds from factories to air cleansing facility by changing direction of the wind with your "hurricane" pointer. Clouds shouldn't touch the pointer or high pressure winds areas, otherwise your global warming meter increases and if it reaches 100% you lose. There are sixteen levels and arcade mode, available when all campaign levels are beaten with perfect score.

There are three game modes and nine difficulty levels affecting speed of falling blocks. You can also choose to play with up to six balls or without them, making Tetripong a standard Tetris game.

This game is a remake of sorts of games like "Boulder Dash", where your job is to collect crystals/diamonds without getting yourself killed in the process. This also means that you have to look out and plan your progress, unless you want to close in diamonds so they cannot be accessed. The game has a lot more details than the old classics, and as such prolongs the gameplay. But it is a rather simple game. We have tried to get in touch with the developer of this game, but without luck.

The hero lent his NES to his cousins, unfortunately for him they brought it back ruined. In a great desperation, he decide to fix it no matter what it takes, and his journey begins. NES Quest looks a lot like old classic point and clicks, and that builds atmosphere. You have to love some of the characters in the game, and the interactions are fun and not all obvious. If you ever had the feeling that comes to you when disaster has struck and your console/PC wont work, then you know the panic...

"Blocksum" is a line up game, similar to the classic game "Tetris". But in fact it adds a new idea to a well known concept: Blocks can be removed by making them fit to their neighbouring blocks in number and quantity. For example, you need four blocks with the number four or seven blocks with the number seven to remove them. So if you have just six blocks with the number seven, you have to create another one by summing up neighbouring blocks so the result is finally seven...

Casual block-removing game with three modes. You can only remove the tiles of the same colour and connected to each other. In normal and motion modes the goal is to survive as long as possible, before tiles reach the top. The difference is, normal mode is turn-based, so new line of tiles appears every time you make the move. In motion mode new line appears only after a while. Classic mode begins with the full grid and the goal is to remove all (or almost all) tiles. Another difference is that...

"Tubopac" is a remake of the game "Oils Well" which was developed by Thomas J. Mitchell and published by Sierra in 1983. It is your aim to collect all the oil pellets within a certain time (depends on the difficulty level). But beware of the monsters; if they touch your tube, you'll use a life and have to start from the beginning of the level again! Without any doubt "Tubopac" is a great retro game! Graphics and music fits the atmosphere and create a retro feeling...

TypeStriker is an unusual vertical shooter where you kill enemies by typing words. Each enemy ship is associated with an English word and to destroy it you have to type this word - your ship automatically sends a homing missile then. Bigger ships require more hits, so it may take several "typestrikes" to destroy them. Movement is controlled by the computer, however there's an option of moving ship left and right with Shift keys, useful for collecting powerups. The ship has automatic...

Spud's Quest is heavily inspired by the Dizi games. This is not a bad thing! There is even an easter egg in the game mentioning the old gem. Spud has to go through some different quests, and they are scattered all over the place, which sometimes makes it difficult to figure out what to do next and if you are currently working on more than one quest. The game has some excellent graphics. It is very well made, with lots of detail and lots of cartoonish goodness. Sound is also well done with music...

Azteca is an almost exact clone of popular Zuma games, developed by PopCap Games. For those unaware: the goal in each level is to destroy the chain of balls moving along the grooved path (or multiple paths), before it reaches the exit. Balls come in different colours and to destroy portion of the chain you have to shoot the ball with your paddle to match at least three identically coloured balls. Like in every game from the genre more explosions in one shoot give more combo points of course and...

Gravity bombs is about shooting spheres with your guns. You have a gun in each corner of the screen, each in its own color. These colors also cover the spheres randomly generated in the playing arena in the middle and you now have to shoot the green colored spheres with the green canon etc. This might sound easy, but you have to take into consideration that the spheres have their own gravitational fields, and as such try to pull your shot towards them. The games satisfaction comes when you hit...

Basic concept of "ByteAlity Tower Defense" is easy. You have to protect your tower from waves of enemies and survive as long as the timer runs. To do so you can place different defense towers on the map and upgrade them as soon as you earned enough points for killing enemies. Of course we have seen this concept in many games before, but what makes "ByteAlity Tower Defense" something special is that there is a massive campaign mode with 120 levels and more than 20 types of...

"Hydorah" is an old school horizontal shoot em up game in the style of "Gradius" and "Nemesis". It was developed by Locomalito ("L'abbaye des Morts", "8bit Killer") and features music by Gryzor87. There are 16 levels (with 27 sublevels), 30 bosses, 70 different kind of enemies, lots of power-ups, unlockables and different weapons. Don't expect this game to be easy. It was developed for old school gamers, which means it is hard and you have to...
